Solar panels on a residential roof. These panels offer both pros and cons.

The Pros and Cons of Installing Solar Roof Panels

Energy efficiency has become the name of the game in the last decade.  As our society becomes more conscious of energy usage, many families are making the switch to modern, energy-efficient technologies.

One improvement that has become increasingly popular is solar panels for residential roofing, which allow homes to run on the sun’s energy.  Though solar panels are a wonderful option, it is important to know the pros and cons before you commit.

The Cost of Roofing Solar Panels

The cost of these energy-efficient panels is both a pro and a con.  Installing them on a roof will require a significant amount of money up front.  However, once the panels are installed, they can save you a significant amount of money on utilities.  The longer you have them, the more ROI you can expect (typically 8-10 years is the “break even” point).

Pro: Higher Resale Value

Because solar panels are expensive to install, potential buyers are drawn to homes that already have them.  In fact, buyers will often pay more for a home that already has them installed.  This is true even if the price of the home is high to include the cost of the panels.

Con: Not All Homes Are Eligible

The efficacy of solar panels depends upon several factors, including:

  • The direction the roof is facing
  • The slope of the roof
  • The climate in your area
  • The strength of your roof

The more sun the panels get, the better they can work.  Here in Arizona, our sunny days can make roofing solar panels a worthwhile investment.

Pro: Roofing Solar Panels Provide Independence

Cabins, camps, and rural homes make great candidates for solar energy.  It can be difficult and costly to run electrical wires to many of these structures.  These panels allow you to create your own energy, and live off of the electrical grid.

Con: Installation Can Be Difficult

As solar panels become more popular, new businesses are opening to keep up with demand.  However, many new businesses don’t have the experienced personnel or the resources to do the job correctly.  When you install, be sure to use an established business to ensure that the job is done well.

Pro: Clean Energy

Of course, the number one pro to installing solar panels on your roof is that they help to eliminate pollution, and provide sustainable energy options for your home.
