Prepare Your Residential Roof for Summer Storms

Summer is right around the corner!  While summertime often means jam-packed days of fun, it also signals the beginning of Arizona’s monsoon season.  Prepare for the upcoming summer storms by investing in your residential roof maintenance and lengthen your roof’s lifespan.  Not sure how?  At SUNVEK, we’ve broken down 4 easy steps to keep your roof safe during monsoon season.

Clean the Gutters

This is a must for residential roof maintenanceCleaning out leaves or debris that end up in your gutters gives water space to drain during a big rain storm.  Gutters are designed to move water away from your house, and if they’re clogged they can’t do that effectively.  Clogged gutters drain slowly, increasing the likelihood of water backing up under the roof system and entering the structure beneath.

Pro-tip: While you’re cleaning your gutters, it’s a good time to secure or put away any outdoor furniture or accessories that could potentially blow around and cause any damage during high winds.

Prune Trees

Trimming back the foliage around your home reduces the possibility of twigs and leaves clogging up your gutters.  Removing bigger overhanging branches and trimming trees also helps decrease the likelihood of a limb falling on your home during a storm.  Not only can broken limbs cause substantial damage to your roof, but leaves and debris that aren’t cleared away slow the rate at which water drains from the roof, potentially resulting in leaks.

Schedule a Roof Check

Have a licensed roofer out to see if you have leaks, or broken or loose shingles or tile as part of your summer roof maintenance.  He or she can also check to see if any flashing or sealants are vulnerable.  A completed roof check will inform you about any necessary repairs you need to take care of.

Follow-Up on Repairs

Now is the time to address any issues that need to be fixed.  Waiting on these repairs can leave your roof vulnerable during those summer storms.  The more proactive you can be with your residential roof maintenance, the longer your roof will likely last!  If you’re unsure about trying to fix an issue yourself, contact a professional roofer who can get the job done right.
