Man working on his laptop in a flooded office. If you notice moisture stains in your commercial ceiling, it's time to call SUNVEK.

Moisture Stains on Your Commercial Ceiling

There’s never a good time to notice water spots on your ceiling.  They spell one thing: trouble. Addressing them right away is the best way to salvage the integrity of your commercial space.   Today we’ll look at what these spots signify and what to do about them.

Moisture Stains on the Ceiling

Unfortunately, water spots on your ceiling mean you’ve discovered moisture stains.  These small signifiers indicate a larger issue that you’ll want to address right away—water damage.

Look around.  Do you notice any other common effects of water damage: puddles, mildew or moldy odor, a sagging ceiling?

It’s time to spring into action.

Find the Source of the Problem

The first thing to do is locate the source of the leak contributing to these moisture stains.  It could be that your building has sustained roof damage, perhaps due to a recent storm.  Or, there could be a pipe that’s leaking.  Regardless, finding and stopping the leak will help limit damage to your commercial building.  You can look for the problem yourself, but it may be best to enlist the help of a professional.  Because we’ve done this for decades, we’re efficient at identifying water issues.

Once we’ve discovered where the water is coming from, we’ll address the problem head-on.   We’ll perform an inspection to reveal if your roof needs to be repaired or replaced.  And then we’ll get to work, restoring your space to its former (water-free) condition.

Beware of the Band-Aid Solution

If you find these spots unsightly, especially if they’re in view of customers, you might be tempted to cover them up or perform minimal repairs yourself.  Don’t!  Now is not the time to slap on a new coat of paint.  First correct the source of the issue, so you don’t have a repeat performance.

The Effect of Water Leakage in Buildings

Commercial roof leaks can be devastating to your business, including:

  • Depreciating the value of your property
  • Damaging internal and external elements
  • Ruining inventory
  • Disrupting work hours
  • Factor in accidents

Black or green spots alongside brown stains are a tell-tale sign of mold growth.  Mold growth can occur in just a few days when not adequately addressed.  If water damage has led to mold growth, you’ll also have to worry about the health and safety of yourself, employees, and customers—along with your building.

Remember: to avoid moisture stains in your commercial building, stick to preventative maintenance.  Stay ahead of interruptive issues by scheduling routine inspections and taking care of problems as they arise.
