Protect Your Roof From Natural Predators

When you look at your roof, you may see a strong and capable looking pillar of strength with the ability to protect your family from the elements. However, your roof has its own natural predators it needs protection from.

Your roof will count on you to protect it against its predators just as you will want the roof to protect you and your family. The best way for you to protect your roof from damage is for you to first recognize what its predators are. Here are some things you’ll need to protect your roof from.

A Small Leak Will Become a Large Leak

If your roof gets a leak in it, the leak may be small and nonthreatening at first. However, that small leak won’t stay that size forever. Soon enough, your roof will have a large leak that can cause serious roof damage, as well as water damage, to the interior of your home and your belongings.

A leak is easy to spot if you see the signs inside your home. The signs can show up as drips from the ceiling, a dark spot on the ceiling, or other damage to the ceiling.

However, you can catch a leak before it even gets to this point by replacing missing or damaged shingles, tiles, or flashing right away. Also, be aware that roofing nails can be another source of roof leaks.

The Sun Can Destroy the Integrity of Your Roof

Your roof can’t escape the relentless rays of the sun. Over time, you’ll start to notice the first signs of an issue when you see part of your roof looking shiny or see granules in the gutter or on the ground.

Stay proactive by watching those more vulnerable areas for signs of damage and having repairs done before they become major issues.

Tree Branches Can Cause Damage to the Roof Surface

If a tree has branches growing over your roof, they can repeatedly scratch away at the roof’s surface. Over time, this can eventually cause broken tiles, loose shingles, and even punctures in the roof’s surface. You will also have the risk of the branches snapping and falling on the roof to cause more damage.

Cut tree branches back far enough so they won’t be able to touch the roof even in extreme winds or when weighed down by snow.

Leaves Can Rot the Roof

Most times, leaves fall on the roof where the wind blows them off. However, leaves that come down in a rainstorm can stick to the roof as more leaves collect and a pile forms. Also, certain areas of the roof, such as the side of the chimney, can allow leaves to collect in a pile. A pile of leaves that sits on the roof and collects water and moisture can lead to rotting.

If you see a pile of leaves on your roof, keep an eye on them and make sure the wind removes them. If those leaves are still there in a few days, have someone go up and remove them.

Condensation Can Damage Your Roof’s Structure

If your attic isn’t properly ventilated, then this can cause moisture that leads to condensation. This condensation can eventually cause the sheathing and rafters to decay.

Increase the ventilation in your attic by installing larger vents. This can help you create a space where the air is closer to the outside air. This will take away the need for concern over this type of roof damage.
